Dr. Nancy Hein started in dentistry in Georgia in 1979 as a dental assistant. Her husband’s job brought them to Dothan in 1981 where she began working with a local orthodontist for several years. In 1987, she was hired by Dr. Tony Dollar, who was the original sole practitioner of this practice. For the next 10 years she worked as a dental assistant, received her hygiene license in 1991, and the last 5 years as the office manager. In 1997 she made the decision to go to dental school at the age of 40. After successful completion of her DMD degree in 2001, she returned to practice with Dr. Tony Dollar.
Dr. Nancy Hein attended Troy University, Dothan, for her undergrad studies before moving to Birmingham to complete her DMD degree. While at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, she was granted several awards and scholarships. She was the first recipient of the David Greer Scholarship Award which was granted to her by Dr. Greer himself. He stated, “I want the award to go to someone who worked extra hard to get into school”. The Birmingham Dental Society awarded her The Award for Leadership, and upon graduation she was awarded the Dean’s Medal for most outstanding dental student.
Dr. Hein is currently a member of the Alabama Dental Association and the Third District Dental Society, where she served as president in 2008. She is also a member of The Academy of General Dentistry where she earned her Fellowship in 2011. She became a Fellow in the International College of Dentists in 2013, which is an honorary dental organization that recognizes and promotes excellence in leadership with an emphasis on service.
Dr. Hein is married to Peter B. Covert. She has two daughters and four grandchildren. Her hobbies include traveling, gardening, running, and going to the beach. Her preferred past time though is digging in her yard with her husband and doing all sorts of gardening and home projects.
Dr. Joe Dougherty (More coming soon)
Photo Coming Soon
Dr. Dougherty has lived in Washington, Michigan, Chile, and Iowa, but it is in Alabama that he is thrilled to put down some Wiregrass roots! His passion for dentistry began while serving a two-year church mission to Chile. It was there that he saw first-hand the effects that oral health can play in one’s life, and he made it his goal to ensure he did his part to help people achieve a healthy smile.
Dr. Dougherty attended Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan and earned his undergraduate degree in Spanish (he speaks fluently). He also ran routes and caught balls as a receiver on the football team. Upon completion, he attended dental school at the University of Iowa and graduated in 2012. He has been serving the underserved in small town Iowa ever since, and he is excited to be bringing his passion closer to family (and better weather) in the south! Dr. Dougherty is a member of the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry
Dr. Dougherty is married to his wife, Angela, and they have 4 busy boys: Jake (10), Eli (7), Ty (4), and Sam (2). Life can get a little hectic, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. Dr. Dougherty enjoys spending time with his family, attending sporting events, golfing, and is sure to start making going to the beach a priority.
